Gastroscopy (EGD) is an endoscopic examination of the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum using a medical device called a gastroscope.
It is used to identify the causes of symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, difficulty or pain when swallowing, suspected gastrointestinal bleeding, anemia, inflammatory and infectious processes, diarrhea, as well as suspicion of oncological diseases of the digestive system.
During gastroscopy, it is possible to take a biopsy (tissue sample) from suspicious areas to establish an accurate diagnosis. Before the endoscopy, the stomach must be empty, so food and water intake should be stopped 6–12 hours before the procedure.
