Muscle weakness, delayed development of motor skills, and easy fatigability in children can sometimes be early signs of rare inherited muscle disorders. Early detection of these conditions is essential for establishing an accurate diagnosis, ensuring appropriate medical supervision, and preserving the child’s quality of life.
In an interview with Modern.az, Dr. Javid Sardarzadeh, MD, PhD, a specialist in Pediatric Neurology at Leyla Medical Center, discussed the causes, clinical signs, diagnostic methods, and treatment options for congenital muscle disorders.
According to the doctor, congenital myopathies are a group of rare disorders that, in most cases, result from genetic changes affecting the structure and function of muscles. These conditions impair the muscles’ ability to contract and may lead to delays in the development of motor skills such as holding up the head, sitting, crawling, and walking.
Dr. Javid Sardarzadeh explained that the main symptoms include the infant appearing unusually floppy or limp when held, difficulty holding up the head, muscle weakness in the arms and legs, and becoming tired quickly during physical activity. In more severe cases, involvement of the swallowing and respiratory muscles may also cause feeding and breathing difficulties.
The doctor noted that congenital myopathies can be associated with various genetic causes. The condition may be inherited or may occur for the first time in a child even when there is no previous family history of the disease. Therefore, the absence of similar conditions in the family does not rule out the possibility of congenital myopathy.
The diagnostic process begins with a comprehensive clinical examination by a pediatric neurologist. The child's muscle strength, muscle tone, reflexes, and age-appropriate motor development are assessed. Depending on the clinical findings, genetic testing, other laboratory and instrumental investigations, and, in some cases, a muscle biopsy may be recommended. Genetic testing plays an important role in identifying the underlying cause of the disease and determining its specific type.
According to Dr. Sardarzadeh, there is currently no treatment that can completely cure most congenital myopathies. However, individualized medical supervision, physiotherapy and rehabilitation, as well as respiratory and nutritional support when necessary, can help preserve the child's functional abilities and improve their quality of life. The treatment and follow-up plan should be tailored to the type and severity of the condition and the child's clinical status.
The doctor advises parents not to dismiss symptoms such as muscle weakness, delayed motor development, difficulty holding up the head, or unusual fatigue as simply individual variations in development. If these signs are observed, parents should consult a pediatric neurologist without delay. In particular, difficulty swallowing or breathing requires urgent medical assessment.
