Heel Test in Newborns

  • The newborn metabolic screening test (also known as the heel or ankle test) is a method for early detection of metabolic and hereditary diseases that do not show clinical symptoms at the initial stage but can lead to serious and irreversible consequences if diagnosed late. The metabolic screening is conducted between the 3rd and 14th day of the baby’s life (depending on the gestational age). A few drops of blood are taken from the newborn’s heel and applied to special filter paper. After drying, the test is performed. The purpose of the test within the first two weeks of life: About 20 metabolic diseases can cause irreversible complications or even premature death during the first weeks of life. The main goal of the test is timely detection of these diseases at the neonatal stage, before symptoms appear, and to prevent severe consequences.
  • Screening is done regardless of symptoms and serves as an important step toward a healthy future.
