Thalassemia

Thalassemia is a hereditary blood disorder characterized by impaired hemoglobin synthesis and chronic anemia caused by a genetic defect.
• If two thalassemia carriers marry, there is:
o a 50% chance that their child will also be a carrier,
o a 25% chance that the child will be affected by thalassemia, and
o a 25% chance that the child will be completely healthy.
• If only one parent is a carrier, there is:
o a 50% chance that the child will be a carrier, and
o a 50% chance that the child will be healthy.
• If two individuals with thalassemia marry, their child will inherit the disease.
To prevent the spread of this condition, couples should undergo mandatory medical screening before marriage.
