Thalassemia

  • Thalassemia is a hereditary blood disorder characterized by impaired hemoglobin synthesis and chronic anemia caused by a genetic defect.
  • • If two thalassemia carriers marry, there is:
  • o a 50% chance that their child will also be a carrier,
  • o a 25% chance that the child will be affected by thalassemia, and
  • o a 25% chance that the child will be completely healthy.
  • • If only one parent is a carrier, there is:
  • o a 50% chance that the child will be a carrier, and
  • o a 50% chance that the child will be healthy.
  • • If two individuals with thalassemia marry, their child will inherit the disease.
  • To prevent the spread of this condition, couples should undergo mandatory medical screening before marriage.
