Measles is a highly contagious viral infection widely spread among children. Although it can affect all age groups, the incidence increases among children aged 1 to 5 years. Measles manifests with high fever, runny nose, cough, conjunctivitis, and maculopapular rash that appears on the skin in stages.
A key characteristic symptom of measles is Koplik’s spots, which appear on the cheeks during the catarrhal stage. These spots help in early diagnosis of the disease before the rash appears.
Measles is primarily a clinical diagnosis; laboratory tests are secondary. After confirming the diagnosis, it is necessary to immediately report it to the State Health Institution. Children must be isolated from groups, and depending on the clinical condition, they can be observed at home or in the hospital.
Measles can lead to serious complications such as otitis, keratitis, pneumonia, and encephalitis. Timely diagnosis and proper treatment are essential.
