Flatulence: Causes and Types

  • Many people experience flatulence after eating. In medicine, this condition is called flatulence. The cause of gas formation is poorly digested food that passes from the stomach into the intestines, leading to the production of a large amount of gas in the intestines. As a result, the abdomen becomes bloated (flatulence occurs) due to gas, liquid, and fecal matter.
  • In this article, we will look at the causes and treatment of flatulence. In middle-aged people, about 700 ml of gas is released from the intestines daily. The rest of the gas passes through the intestinal walls. Gas in the intestines is mainly formed due to the absorption of air from the atmosphere, microorganisms that develop there, and seepage from blood vessels. In a healthy body, gas circulates easily between the plasma of the intestines and the blood thanks to stable pressure. Part of the gas is absorbed by the blood and expelled through the lungs.
  • Physiological causes of flatulence after eating include:
  • • Consumption of gas-producing foods
  • • Overeating
  • • Eating quickly, smoking, talking while eating — in these cases, air is swallowed, and 30% of this air reaches the intestines
  • • Use of baking soda for heartburn
  • • Excessive consumption of carbonated drinks
  • • Changes in habitual diet (for example, when traveling to another country)
  • • Pregnancy
  • Foods that promote gas formation include:
  • • Milk and ice cream
  • • Grain products, bread, cereals (except rice)
  • • Beans, legumes, corn, soy products
  • • Nuts: peanuts, hazelnuts, cashews
  • • Cabbage, beets, onions
  • • Mushrooms
  • • Pineapple, grapes, pears, and peaches
  • Causes of pathological flatulence may include:
  • • Dysbiosis
  • • Irritable bowel syndrome
  • • Polyps, adhesions, diverticula, malignant and benign tumors in the intestines
  • • Gastritis and stomach ulcers
  • • Chronic pancreatitis
  • • Crohn’s disease
  • • Intestinal flu
  • Neurotic and allergic flatulence are also considered pathological. Flatulence after eating can also be caused by helminths (worms) and infections.
  • Types of flatulence:
  • • Alimentary: caused by excessive consumption of carbonated drinks, beer, flour products, fruits
  • • Dynamic: occurs due to impaired intestinal motility and digestion speed, usually after gastrointestinal surgeries
  • • Psychogenic: caused by prolonged stress
  • • Digestive: caused by impaired food digestion
  • • Dysbiotic: caused by changes in intestinal microflora and common in gastritis and pancreatitis
  • There is a connection between diseases of the gastrointestinal organs. Therefore, it is necessary to undergo several examinations to determine the cause of your symptoms. If certain symptoms appear, do not turn to folk medicine, as the disease may be at a more advanced stage. In this case, treatment will be more complicated and expensive.
