  • During oncological surgery, it is important to avoid disturbing the tumor within the organ as much as possible. It is also essential to ligate (tie off) the blood vessels that supply and drain the tumor. This approach helps to relatively prevent the spread of the tumor even if it is disturbed.
  • In cancer patients, the tumor can spread through metastases both hematogenously (via the bloodstream) and lymphogenously (via the lymphatic system). Lymphatic vessels capture and disseminate tumor cells. Therefore, removal of lymph nodes is crucial for determining the stage of the disease and for planning further treatment for the patient.
  • The surgery should be performed in a way that minimizes contact with tumor cells, besides ligating lymph nodes and vessels at the root.
