Is Hair Loss in Infants Normal?

  • Doctor, my child has started losing hair. We used the “old-fashioned method” and completely shaved their head...
  • In reality, hair loss in children is most commonly observed in the first 6 months of life — and this is a natural process. Usually, hair falls out around the temples or the back of the head, forming round bald patches. When parents notice hair loss, they often resort to the folk method of “shaving the hair so it grows back thicker.” However, this practice has no scientific basis: it only irritates the scalp and does not positively affect hair growth.
  • Main causes of hair loss in children:
  • • The child rubs their head against the pillow during sleep — this causes localized hair loss. New hair usually grows back in these spots.
  • • Deficiency of micronutrients and vitamins such as iron, zinc, and vitamin D.
  • • Some diseases, for example, thyroid disorders (goiter), autoimmune diseases.
  • • In older children, stress is often the main cause of hair loss, as it is in adults.
  • Conclusion: Hair loss in infants generally does not pose a threat and is a physiological phenomenon. However, if you have doubts or if the problem persists, be sure to consult a doctor.
  • Thanks to our pediatric endocrinologist, Dr. Samira Nasibova, for the provided information.
