Obesity

Obesity

The most effective treatment for obesity is achieved through a comprehensive approach — adherence to a diet, physical activity, and psychological correction of the patient’s condition. Women are twice as likely to suffer from obesity as men. The critical age period for gaining excess weight is considered to be between 30 and 60 years old. According to international experts from the World Health Organization, obesity is a global epidemic affecting millions of people worldwide, regardless of profession, social status, nationality, geography, gender, or age. In 90% of cases, obesity is linked to excessive food consumption, and only 5% is due to metabolic disorders. Factors contributing to the development of obesity: • Sedentary lifestyle • Hereditary disorders of enzymatic activity (increased activity of enzymes involved in lipogenesis and decreased activity of enzymes that break down fats — lipolysis) • Mistakes in diet and eating habits (excessive consumption of carbohydrates, fats, confectionery, salt, alcohol, especially in the evening) • Certain endocrine diseases (hypothyroidism, hypogonadism, insulinoma, Cushing’s disease) • Psychogenic overeating • Physiological states (lactation, pregnancy, menopause) • Stress, insomnia, intake of psychotropic and hormonal drugs (steroids, insulin, contraceptives)
